Exploring the Legal Profession Program in New York, NY
The Exploring the Legal Profession Program is a four-day intensive program for students to gain early exposure to careers in law. New York is home to many law schools and the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals and serves as the home base for several of the nation’s top law firms. Students will experience the broad range of legal practice. We may visit federal or state court, meet with a judge or two, engage with UChicago alumni at several law firms, and meet with attorneys working in government and nonprofits. We may tour the two top-ten law schools, Columbia Law School and NYU Law School, and speak with admissions officers and perhaps sit in on a first-year law school class. Participating students will have the opportunity to bond with their classmates over New York fare and a group outing or two that might include a visit to a New York museum such as the Guggenheim, a scavenger hunt, or a walk on the High Line.
Students in the program will be able to network with UChicago alumni in the legal field, including recent alumni who are now law students to get a sense of the law school experience. They will have the opportunity to develop connections that might lead to internships down the road. They will emerge with a better understanding of what it means to practice law on a daily basis and whether exploring a legal career further might make sense for them. The program may also include a StrengthsFinder session, which will help them identify the strengths they bring to UChicago and how those strengths might work with a career in law. Through interactions with practicing attorneys, students will gain insight into the ethical obligations of attorneys and an understanding of the professionalism that is a necessary component of a successful legal career.
All participants will be matched with a roommate for lodging purposes and will have the opportunity to engage with other program participants online prior to start of the program.
Program Costs
$1,000. Includes lodging, meals, local transportation between site visits, and the cost of organized group activities. Need-based financial aid may be available.
