Exploring the Legal Profession Pre-Orientation Program
The Exploring the Legal Profession Pre-Orientation Program is a three-day intensive program in which twenty students eager to gain early exposure to careers in law will experience the practice of law in Chicago. Chicago is home to two top law schools and the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals and serves as the home base for several of the nation’s top law firms. Students will experience the broad range of legal practice. We will visit federal or state court, meet with a judge or two, engage with UChicago alumni at several law firms, and meet with the directors of legal non-profits. We will tour the two top-ten law schools, UChicago Law School and Northwestern Pritzker School of Law, and speak with admissions officers and perhaps sit in on a first-year law school class. There will also be an opportunity for a service component with a nonprofit organization in Chicago. The students will have the opportunity to bond with their classmates over typical Chicago fare such as deep dish pizza, visit iconic spots in Chicago such as Millennium Park, and perhaps take an architecture tour or enjoy a Chicago White Sox baseball game.
Students in the program will be able to explore their interest in law by networking with UChicago alumni in the legal field, and getting a sense of the law school experience. They will emerge with a better understanding of what it means to practice law and whether exploring a legal career further might make sense for them. They will have the opportunity to develop connections that might lead to internships down the road. The program will also include a Strengthsfinder session, which will help them identify the strengths they bring to UChicago and how those strengths might work with a career in law. Through interactions with practicing attorneys, students will gain insight into the ethical obligations of attorneys and an understanding of the professionalism that is a necessary component of a successful legal career.
