Frequently Asked Questions

When should I start preparing my graduate school application?

For STEM PhD programs, applications generally open around September of your fourth year (if planning to matriculate in the following fall) and close between November and January.

Our office recommends scheduling an appointment with your career adviser to discuss your grad school plans in the Spring before the application cycle (typically Spring of junior year). The summer leading into the application cycle is a great time to get started to ensure your strongest submission.

I am currently an underclassman considering going to graduate school. What should I be preparing now?

In addition to having a strong record of research, STEM graduate school applications typically require 3 letters of recommendation, thus we encourage students to seek opportunities to cultivate relationships with faculty members, whether in research, internships, teaching, or coursework.

Other opportunities that are optional but can strengthen your application include graduate coursework and disseminating your research through published manuscripts and conference presentations. Teaching and leadership experience are also great to highlight in your future applications.

Are there any resources provided by Career Advancement to help me prep for graduate school applications?

See our Applicant Resources, which includes the STEM Applicant Support Series program designed to provide tailored and structured support for students applying to STEM graduate programs.

Should I take the GRE?

A majority of STEM graduate programs have phased out the General GRE requirement, however some may still have General and Subject test requirements. In some cases, submitting your test results when given an “Optional” option can help support your application.

It is recommended that you start by identifying your list of programs before deciding to schedule your GRE test.

Can alumni enroll in the STEM Applicant Support Series (SASS)?

Yes! If you have graduated from UChicago within the last 5 years and you are applying to graduate school, you are eligible to enroll.
