Biology Research Opportunities

Hands-on research experiences are an essential part of an education in biological sciences and neurosciences. Students are encouraged to reach out directly to faculty members of interest to learn more about their work and explore potential ways to get involved. More information about research programs organized by the Biological Sciences Collegiate Division and recommendations for students seeking research opportunities aligned with their interests and career goals can be found here. Summer research programs are organized in a variety of fields, including:

  • Biomedical Imaging

  • Chromatin and Epigenetics

  • Developmental Neurobiology

  • Ecology and Evolution

  • Genetics and Genomics

  • Pathophysiology, Biology, and Bioenergetics of Renal Diseases

  • Public Health

  • Quantitative Biology

  • Translational Medicine

Additional research opportunities include fellowships through the Marine Biological Laboratory and the Center for Global Health.

The University of Chicago Neuroscience Institute provides multiple opportunities for summer research, including the Neuroscience Early Stage Scientist Training Program (NESSTP), the Jeff Metcalf Summer College de France Neuroscience Internship, and the Neuroscience Research Metcalf Fellowship. More information about these programs and tips for finding a research mentor can be found on the Neuroscience Institute website here.

The College Center for Research and Fellowships (CCRF) is a great resource for students pursuing undergraduate research and nationally competitive fellowships.

  • Quarterly Undergraduate Research Information Sessions

  • Research Grant Programs

  • Resources and Information about Research Opportunities and Funding (including a Research Opportunities Database)

  • Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium
